A Guide to Choosing a Picking System for Mechanically Harvesting Blueberries

This article provides a detailed comparison between two primary categories of shaking systems, Orbitor and Dynarotor, offered by Oxbo for mechanically harvesting blueberries for fresh market or processing, outlining the specific uses, benefits, and considerations for each

machine harvesting blueberries

Oxbo offer two primary categories of shaking systems or picking heads: Orbirotor and Dyanarotor. There is not a quick answer to which head style is best–both styles will pick most varieties in most conditions.

The Orbirotor is a patented design that originated with Oxbo (under the Korvan brand). A unique counter balanced weight system creates a circular (orbital, circle) shaking pattern at the end of the rod.

The Orbirotor has been the most popular style of shaking system for any selective market as well as in areas like the Pacific Northwest where the same harvester could be used in raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. The Orbirotor is best suited to plants that produce less vigorous wood and/or less vigor in general. Its more selective design can leave blue fruit in the middle of large, woody plants. However, the new OrbirotorMax head has addressed this issue in many markets. The Orbirotor uses a more flexible/gentle rod material and rods can be green or black. Another consideration: because of the unique weight system and gear box, an Orbirotor head will need to be rebuilt over time.

In general, choose the Orbirotor if you want:

  • More selective harvesting
  • A shaking system for multiple berry types
  • A picking head for less-woody varieties

The Orbirotor is available in the following models: 9140, 8040, 8140, 7440.

The OrbirotorMax is available in the 7450.

The Dynarotor is a rotary style shaking system with weight that creates a horizontal shaking action. Adding more weight increases the stroke at the end of the rod. Dynarotors use a stiff, firm picking rod; all Oxbo rods are coated with a full-length polymer-based coating.

The Dynarotor has become increasingly popular for its ability to pick all the ripe fruit on each pass in larger, woody bushes and is popular for its more aggressive style. This is especially true in cleanup passes or in climates that need more aggressive shaking–often related to higher heat environments. The DynarotorMax in the Oxbo 7450 is an ideal set up for large, high yielding newer blueberry varieties.

In general, choose the Dynarotor if you want:

  • The ability to be more aggressive in harvesting
  • A shaking system exclusively for blueberries
  • A picking head for woody, large plants

The Dynarotor is available in the following models: 8040, 8140, 7440.

The DynarotorMax is available in the 7450.
